WonderKids Training Institute |
WonderKids was founded by Mariam and Mohamed Amra in 1992 as a modest Montessori preschool in Sherwood, Durban with 13 children. Over the next few years it grew steadily and soon it achieved the status of being one of the largest Montessori pre-schools in Kwazulu Natal. The need for a training centre was soon realized and in 1997 WonderKids succeeding in obtaining a curriculum from the 'Learning for Sustainability' Project and started the training centre in 1998 with 8 learners. The centre grew steadily and by 2010 had graduated over 350 educators in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg. The ‘big break' came when Wonder-Kids was awarded a learnership from the ETDP-SETA to train 20 learners from Zululand at NQF Level 5, i.e. National Diploma in ECD in 2007. This was one of the the first few opportunities for a Montessori group in KZN to train educators in the Montessori approach to ECD. The impact the learners created in their workplace was so overwhelming that it soon echoed in the corridors of the ETDP-SETA and a further 217 learnerships were granted to WonderKids since 2008 which consisted of 117 Level 5 and 100 Level 4 learners. The course is aligned with the SAQA NQF standards. Whilst retaining the core of the curriculum changes, additions have been made wherever necessary to suit the SA context in line with the Department of Education's National Curriculum Statement. This is the first locally established college in Kwa-Zulu Natal and the course is comparable with international standards. The highly qualified and experienced lecturers have all graduated from locally and internationally recognized institutions. In July 2008 WonderKids was awarded the KZN ABSA/Sowetan Award in the training category for the provincial award and reached the semi finals for the national award. The course is held every Saturday from 9am –2 pm and includes lectures, workshops and practical lessons. The students have the unique opportunity of learning in a pre-school environment and practical teaching experienced is available at the WonderKids pre-school. The course commences in February every year and students who successfully complete the course are awarded certificates and diplomas respectively. |
